1976 Ducati 900 Super Sport

There are Ducati 900 Super Sports you buy to preserve, and there are Ducati 900 Super Sports you buy to ride.

This is the latter.

Introduced in the mid-1970s, the 900SS represents one of the defining periods in Ducati’s history: an 864cc square-case L-twin with bevel-driven camshafts and desmodromic valve operation, housed in a motorcycle built with very little separation between road bike and racing machine.

This 1976 example has spent much of its recent life in the care of Desmoto Sport. Its longtime owner has now aged out of riding, making available a motorcycle that we have known, serviced, and maintained for years.

Design & Engineering

The 900SS is a remarkably direct motorcycle. Its long fuel tank, clip-on handlebars, solo seat and narrow fairing place the rider directly over a mechanical package dominated by Ducati’s bevel-drive twin.

Equipment currently fitted to this motorcycle includes:

• 864cc square-case desmodromic L-twin

• Dell’Orto PHF32 carburetors

• Conti exhausts with Ducati part numbers

• Marzocchi front fork

• Brembo triple-disc brakes

• Borrani alloy rims

• Veglia instrumentation

All of these components were fitted to the motorcycle when it entered our care. We do not have documentation establishing every component as original to its factory-delivered configuration and make no claim to that effect.

The motorcycle carries the following identification:

Engine: DM860 087137
Homologation: DGM 13715 OM

The frame and engine numbers fall within published period ranges for a 1976 Ducati 900SS. We do not have factory documentation establishing the motorcycle as a matching-numbers example and therefore do not represent it as one.

Service & Mechanical Condition

This motorcycle has been a regular presence at Desmoto Sport and has received extensive mechanical attention during its time with us.

Work performed includes:

• Replacement of engine seals

• Extensive carburetor and fuel-system tuning

• Complete brake restoration

• Marzocchi fork serviced

The emphasis throughout has been on maintaining the motorcycle mechanically rather than cosmetically restoring it.

Cosmetic Condition

This is not a restored 900SS.

The paint, bodywork, frame and hardware show chips, scratches and wear accumulated over decades. We have made no attempt to disguise that history, and the photographs are intended to show the motorcycle as it actually exists.

The Veglia odometer indicates approximately 1,220 miles. We do not have documentation establishing this as the motorcycle’s original accumulated mileage and make no claim as to actual mileage.

The currently fitted Pirelli Sport Demon tires have good tread but carry 2015 date codes and should be replaced before serious road use.

The Point

As early Ducati 900 Super Sports have become increasingly collectible, many surviving examples have also become increasingly difficult to use as motorcycles.

This one presents a different opportunity.

It has scars. It has been ridden. Its mechanical condition has received considerably more attention than its cosmetic condition, and it has spent years under the care of a shop that knows the motorcycle.

You don’t have to be the person who puts the first chip in the paint.

You can just ride it.
